What is FIT Cymru?

FIT Cymru is the Welsh arm of the the National Playing Fields Association

What does FIT do in Wales?

  • FIT is concerned with improving the quality of life and health of all members of society, by assisting in the provision, improvement and protection of high quality, well used facilities for outdoor sport and play
  • FIT currently protects over 150 sites throughout Wales amounting to approximately 620 acres
  • FIT campaigns and lobbies appropriate bodies so that the importance of well-equipped open space to the health and happiness of the population is properly valued
  • FIT recommends a minimum of six acres of outdoor playing space per 1,000 of the population - the Six Acre Standard
  • FIT advises on a range of topics from drainage of sports pitches to the suitability of children's play equipment and produces a number of relevant publications

Why do we exist?

  • Recreational and green spaces are a vital part of every community enhancing everyone's quality of life. They provide safe places for children to play and somewhere for adults to exercise, participate in sport or just relax. These spaces need to be protected.
  • National inactivity is estimated to cost Wales at least £500 million pa - yet we continue to allow our playing fields to be built on, thus depriving people of an accessible and free provision of recreational space.
  • There is no statutory protection of recreational space in Wales! The nation protects its historic buildings, public gardens and even trees but the country's irreplaceable recreational heritage is under threat.
  • We are currently aware of 15 playing fields under threat in Wales
