Pontardawe

Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council expressed a wish to release part of the King George’s Field in Pontardawe from dedication (protection) in order to provide land for a swimming pool. The land in question was unsuitable for recreation so FIT Cymru agreed to a land exchange that led to nearby Parc Ynysderw bceoming a King George’s Field instead.  This site is a large field consisting of a number of pitches that can serve the sporting needs of the adjacent school and provide a home for many clubs and competitions.

By taking a flexible approach to preservation, FIT Cymru has brought a greater amount of recreational land of good quality under long term protection with the benefit of a swimming pool to add to the community’s sporting facilties.

Toller Pocorum Dorset

Toller Pocorum in Dorset is another example of a seemingly idyllic village with a fundamental flaw for residents. Neither the village nor the surrounding farmland had space for young people to play. That was until a small group of residents put this right. They identified a suitable site, negotiated with the land owner, liaised with FIT and gained the support of the parish council to ensure their campaign was a success.

Through hard work and sheer commitment, young people have a new recreation facility that's protected for future generations as well.
